2-Day Rock Rescue!

This is a 2-day rescue course providing more time to learn complex systems. Day 1 covers material in our Rescue 1 Rock followed by day 2, getting you to apply your new skills in realistic rescue scenarios.

A key element in this course is scenario based real rescue practice. Learning the skills on day 1 followed by reviewing and applying the skills on day 2 is hugely beneficial to learning.

This course gives you 2 full days of rescue fun and learning with a guide.

 

Itinerary

Meet your Guide at Cloudburst Cafe in Squamish at 8am. Plan to be back at the cars by 4pm.  

8am - 4pm

 

Pre-requisites

  • Lead climbing (sport or trad)

  • Basic rock anchors

  • Rapelling

 

Waiver

You are required to read the VMG Waiver and agree to it’s terms and conditions prior to paying or signing. Your guide needs to see the emailed waiver verification before participating.

 

Goals

Day 1

  • What goes in your pack? First aid kits, cell phones, knife, headlamp, etc

  • Bailing kit: extra cord, webbing, maillons, leaving gear? How do I bail? Planning descent options.

  • Rope ascending

  • Escaping the belay:

    • Ratcheting

    • Load transfers with prusik

    • Tying off the belay

  • Raising systems: 3:1 hauling with a prusik, 5:1 hauling

  • Lowering systems: Munter hitch, redirected ATC, lowering past knots.

  • Rappeling and passing knots, tandem rappelling.

Day 2

  • Review and answer questions from Day 1

  • Discuss self-rescue when it is practicel

Focus on 4 complex rescue scenarios:

  1. Rappel rope stuck and need to rope ascend to free it.

  2. Hair caught in belay device on rappel.

  3. Rappeling with injured climber in tandem.

  4. Lowering injured climber with 2 ropes tied together.

Note: Goals are flexible and can be tailored for groups.

  • 2 x double length sling (120cm)

  • 2 x cordalette (5m x 7mm cord)

  • 1 x Sterling Hollow Block 13.5”

  • 1 x 3/8” Maillon or Quick-link

  • 6 x quickdraws

  • 2 x alpine Draws (60cm slings)

  • Gear rack (set of nuts #4-10, single set cams 0.2 - 3”)

  • 1 x Nut tool

  • Rope 9.2-9.8mm x 60-70m
